Shrimp 5/11/2005

The recreational shrimp fishery in the waters off Tacoma has been shut down. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the closure of Marine Area 11, which extends from the northern end of Vashon Island to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The department closed the area after catch estimates showed sport shrimpers pulled an estimated 2,200 pounds of spot shrimp from area waters Saturday, the opening day.

That catch was more than triple the sport fishery’s 600-pound allocation for the season, and also exceeded 1,500-pound allocation for the sport and commercial shrimp fisheries combined, said Rich Childers, a department shellfish biologist.

Childers said field staff counted 454 pot buoys on the water on opening day, up from 86 buoys last year and just 18 in 2003. High numbers of large shrimp per pot also contributed in boosting the catch well above expectations, Childers said.

Thanks. I heard about this story but had not read it. The area I am interested in is Marine area 13 south of the Narrows.
So far I understand that shrinp like water thats moving, 200 to 300 feet deep and a rocky bottom.

Don't tell me I bought all this gear for not. I dropped them off in 250 and 300 feet off the south end of Anderson Island and got a good selection of bullhead, sole and crab. At least our freinds got to see an old tug and have a nice lunch at Tolamie state park. Tolamie is a great stop for us because our bow rider has no rest room on board. I think my next try will be around Fox Island.
