CYC Center Sound Series #2 - Possession Pt. 3/9/02
With the forcast calling for 20-30kts. and getting dusted with snow the day before, I really didn't expect to be becalmed with blue skies and sunshine in the morning. The start was delayed for some time 'til the committe picked up and moved to just south of Edmonds where a light northwesterly was filling in.
Boats got off to a slow start in the light northerly with the majority taking the east side up to Edmonds. There was a pretty obvious dead spot in the middle and the west side near Point-No_Pt. with a few boats with spinnakers hanging like bedsheets.
A few puffs of a surprising southeasterly started to fill in and the fleet jibed over to starboard and within ten minutes it built to fifteen knots with higher gusts and huge wind shifts. There were quit a few knockdowns and roundups as boats struggled to get the light kites down and handle the gusts. A number of boats went back to headsails just to maintain control in the puffs which were above 20kts. by this time.
The mark was suprisingly clear when we got there though I chicken jibed rather than risk a full power spinout with boom spinning us around. Most boats had their blades up and the majority kept on port tack with a few making hitches in early to get to flatter water and current relief.
On the way back the wind came down as the front passed and we peeled back to the #1 and it looked pretty dire just south of Edmonds as the wind lightened up to five knots. Just like the southeasterly, a southerly came rolling up the sound and brought the wind up to above fifteen in less than ten minutes.
We had managed to put some distance on the Soveral-33 Splif and was catching up to the leader, the J105 Jaded, but once the wind filled in we weren't able to close the gap close enough and took second.
Not too bad on a day that had some dramatic wind shifts and wild gusts to keep everyone on their toes. I think everyone came back in a little relieved it wasn't as bad as the forcast predicted, but it was definitely a tough race.
On to Pulley Point and a reverse start - oh joy.
